Providing Adolescent Orthodontic Treatment and Teen Braces in Mt. Pleasant, SC
At Gardner Orthodontics, most of our orthodontic treatment can be accomplished in 1 full or comprehensive phase of braces. There are several good reasons why adolescent or teen years are the optimal time for orthodontic treatment. First of all, by the age of 11-13, most of the baby teeth have been lost and the permanent ones have come in. Braces are typically placed on grown up teeth so once they appear in the mouth, full treatment can be started. Most results can be achieved in less than 2 years and with less frequent visits due to new technology.
Secondly, it’s better to correct many orthodontic problems during adolescence because the body is growing. Appliances that correct the bite must be used during this growth spurt to maximize the skeletal correction of the bite. Appliances like palatal expanders must be used prior to the cessation of growth while the palatal suture is still open. In later years, when the bones of the face and jaw are fully developed, many conditions become more difficult (and costly) to treat.
Thirdly, being a teen is hard enough and being afraid to smile because of crooked teeth or a bad bite will only add to the frustration. Having a beautiful smile helps build self-esteem and self-confidence.
Finally, you won’t be alone! You’ll probably see some of your friends or classmates wearing braces too. You will have lots of people to share and compare your orthodontic experiences with. Dr. Gardner offers both metal and cosmetic braces for teens in Mount Pleasant, SC. Most adolescents and teens prefer the metal braces and have fun changing colors of the ties at each appointment. But if visibility is a concern, tooth colored or cosmetic braces are available. Invisalign Teen, a series of invisible aligners, is also a great option to correct crowding or spacing.
